The Energy Efficient Rebate Scheme For Efficient IT

The Energy Efficient rebate scheme is in place to reward business buyers for buying energy efficient data processing equipment to install in data centers. The rebates are offered by energy suppliers who are concerned that the dramatic growth in information technology centers will create too much demand for electrical energy in the coming years. The numbers are already frightening, and as data processing continues to drive this information age they are expected to rise extremely quickly and dramatically. Developing the infrastructure to meet this challenge is going to be difficult to say the least.

The background to the rebate scheme is easy enough to understand, and it comes from the fact that information technology in business has grown exponentially with the development of the Internet, the increase in speed and capacity of modern computer equipment, and the continuing of data in all businesses from paper records to electronic data storage. Even though equipment is becoming capable of processing more transactions in a shorter time, the increase in numbers of transactions is ensuring that the more powerful computers are getting every bit as much work as their predecessors. The amount of power needed is therefore rising dramatically.

The savings which are applied under the Energy Efficient rebate scheme are assessed on the first year of use, and are calculated based on the energy used to power information technology equipment. This includes the cooling fans which are needed to keep the machines running without overheating, and all data drives which may be attached to the data processing equipment. Reductions can also be applied if some of the power used can be switched from a peak usage time to time when there is less demand for power from other users. Switching power intensive processing tasks to the night hours is one way of achieving this.

The manufacturers of this information technology equipment are also providing their own incentives to buy energy efficient equipment. Incentives are also available for those who want to lease the equipment, and pay for it over time. In some cases the information technology processing organization will be offered a choice of a lease at a lower price than usual, or a one time cash rebate payment which they can immediately put back into their business. This can be a useful way of expanding the business without taking on the risk of extra borrowings.

A combination of the incentives offered by the utility providers and the manufacturers of the equipment can result in a substantial savings to the business. As they continue to process data in increasing amounts, the savings will become even more noticeable. The leasing of equipment allows for an easier upgrade whenever there is a significant advance in the technology being used, so this is the best way for many businesses to obtain their equipment. If the manufacturer incentive is deferred, the amount paid monthly for both the lease and the fuel can be brought right down to a far lower level.

The Energy Efficient rebate scheme is clear evidence of serious concern within the electricity industry that it is going to be put under pressure in the coming years to meet an increasing demand. If new supply cannot be created to satisfy this demand, prices will inevitably have to rise to balance the equation. This will be felt across the whole of society, and not just in the information technology sector. The lives of many citizens would be diminished greatly, and would even be under threat of survival. A power rationing system may even be needed to maintain social order, so it is easy to see why emphasis is being applied to the Energy Efficient rebate.
